A bill that changes the name of Nebraska's Commission on Mexican-Americans for the first time in its nearly 40-year history has been signed into law.
Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln introduced LB139 to rename the group the Commission on Latino-Americans.
The commission was created in 1972 to link state government and what was mostly people of Mexican descent. Today, the agency works with a more diverse group of people from several Latin American countries.
Interim director Sam Franco, who was involved in the commission's creation, says it's the group's first name change.
The agency has told state leaders that the change will cost about $3,600 to update letterhead, brochures, its Web site and other items.
The change takes effect this summer.
